About
I, like Frida Kahlo, Käthe Kollwitz, and countless other artists, picked up a brush to try to make sense of the pain and chaos in the world and my life.
For the past thirty years I lived in self-imposed exile in Africa, and Europe, painting, teaching, and encouraging people marginalized by the traumas of sexual abuse, war and religious persecution. I consciously investigated artistic themes within these groups to facilitate the healing process in recovery from systemic abuse.
Standing on the shoulders of Joan Mitchell and Grace Hartigan, I consider myself a Figurative Abstract Expressionist. I draw inspiration from past experiences, memories, and emotional connections, and I use compositional techniques and colour choices to re-interpret responses to life’s transitions.
As a painter I have been involved as an activist in the therapeutic use of art, while working in over 15 different countries across Africa, the Middle East and Europe. In 2020 I returned to the United States taking up permanent residence in New Mexico.
